He was her saviour
He rescued her when she was but a cub
Now he rescues her from her dreams
Whipping wisdom in her back,
Dreams too big, crack too loud
The world is watching
He had to please the crowd.
He blows his whistle
She jumps the hoop
Runs through fire
Every night
Her roars sending a chill
Through everyone’s spine
A well-choreographed performance
For the crowd.
Her teeth so sharp
Her eyes so wild
Nails that could tear through flesh
A Royalty from Bengal,
Sleeps in her cage night after night
like a kitten on her pillow,
So gorgeous so dangerous
And so tamed
Tigress of a circus.
Her father, so proud.

So gorgeous so dangerous
And so tamed

Isn’t it also true for a lot of women in India and I assume outside too…? Such a shame.

truly, a lot of power and energy in your poetry! And yet how sad a life to please the audience, no? Or is he happy, is the tigeress happy?

The tiggeress… I imagine does not know what she is missing out on because she has never been to a jungle, never known her true nature and strengths. She is ok…may be even happy in ignorance, but isn’t it such a waste of a royal tigress..that’s my question.

yes it is, I feel like you a waste of her nature. But would she ever get along in wildlife? Maybe she became more a normal cat, and need all this around?..I´m really not sure about this….

This one made me feel sad. Truly, circus animals have a horrible life. No wild animal should be tamed or caged (unless they have been abandoned in the wild, and their only chance at survival involves humans). I admire zoos and other facilities that aim at rehabilitation, and returning animals to their natural habitats where they belong.

I feel the same way about both animals and humans… who are made to discard or never realise their true nature or strengths because the ring master choreographed their destiny to please the crowd. It’s terrible.
