You can get rid of a lot
But not the beast that lives inside,
We all have that side,
We all live with it still inside.
No one gets rid of it
Neither should you try to
For it often protects you,
But it can destroy you too
If it fails to learn the difference
Between the two.
Tame it, you can and only you can,
It was meant to be tamed by you.
Don’t serve it, train it to serve you
We are all our own ringmasters.
You can’t tame life
But as long as you can tame
That beast of you, you wouldn’t need to.
Once we find a way to trust ourselves
We stop needing assurance
From the outside world.

Some of those traits we have, indeed protected us in some way at some time. When they become patterns they can work against us. We seem to have no control over our choices so we seek assurance from the outside world.
Your poem walks through this very beautifully.

I love the photo for this poem. Of course, I love wild animals in general. 😉
I was just thinking the other day about how all humans have a dark side, whether we care to admit it or not. Thanks for sharing ☺

of* not ‘off’ – this is a great set of lines and very true indeed. There are many ‘untamed beasts’ out there and they bring sorrow and hurt to lots of people – including those to whom they belong. We all need to control our inner beast.
