After Nuwara Eliya, we were headed to Arugam Bay, a Bay on Sri Lanka’s southeast coast, the best place for a surfing vacation in the country. I am not a surfer but I wanted to try it, maybe I am a surfer, I just don’t know it yet.
On our way, we came across this small street, the sidewalk was full of shack like cafes, little gift shops and a lot of tourists. Rohaan, our driver/guide told us we are in Ella. Ella is a small town with a rich biodiversity, a lot of mesmerizing waterfalls and a hilly countryside covered with evergreen, mossy forests and tea plantations. The word Ella is Tamil for Waterfall. Yes, Ella has that many waterfalls.
With a towel tied around his neck
Like a cape, he flew.
He fought the monster he read about
In fairy tales, when he was feeling blue.
He rode his imaginary horse and waved
His wooden sword like a white knight.
He was going to be a hero, a savior,
He was going to fight for what’s right.
As she walked with confident steps
Towards the life she wanted,
Looking poised and prepared to the world,
Her mind was cluttered with muddled thoughts.
A gradual qualm had taken over her,
Does the end always justify the means?
She visioned it happening differently,
And what if the life she wanted
Is not really the life that is good for her?
Udaipur, a city of lakes, situated in the state of Rajasthan, in western India. It is also referred to as the Venice of East. I have not yet been to Venice so I can’t confirm the comparison, but I can tell you this, It’s a beautiful city, full of art, culture, forts and lakes.
Sometimes we meet someone, a complete stranger and something good happens, we feel lighter and more cheerful, almost hopeful, in their presence. Meeting Leni is very much like that, just by being around her, you feel good, positive. She has this infectious cheerful energy but that energy does not come from innocence or naivety. After only a few conversations, you can tell, she has seen the ugly unkindness of life and you can tell, she has stayed strong through it all. It’s so great meeting people who have been tested by life a number of times, but life has still not managed to rob them of their energy or dim their light.
